Why choose a mineral spf?

At REFY we're all about creating essential, easy-to-use products that work with your on-the-go lifestyle.

That's why we developed Skin Trio SPF 50, a 3-in-1 mineral SPF 50, moisturiser and brightening serum created to simplify your skin prep routine.

Did you know there are two kinds of sunscreen - chemical sunscreen and mineral sunscreen?

Knowing the differences can help you find the perfect SPF for your skin. We'll help to simplify and break down the differences for you!

MINERAL VS. CHEMICAL SUNSCREEN

Mineral sunscreens, also known as ‘physical sunscreen’, are infused with active ingredients Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium Oxide that form a physical barrier on your skin. They work by sitting on top of the skin to reflect, scatter, and block harmful UVA and UVB rays. Additionally, some mineral sunscreens like the Skin Trio go beyond the basics to also protect against blue light, which can cause wrinkles & hyperpigmentation.

Chemical sunscreens, unlike mineral sunscreen, allow UV light to penetrate to the skin. Then chemical ingredients like Avobenzone/Octinoxate/Oxybenzone inactivate the absorbed UV rays and convert them into a small amount of heat, which evaporates from the skin.

BENEFITS OF MINERAL SUNSCREEN

Better for sensitive skin types
As mineral sunscreens aren’t absorbed directly into the skin they are less likely to cause irritation.

Less likely to clog pores
Since mineral sunscreens sit on the skin’s surface rather than penetrating deeply, they are less likely to clog pores and trigger breakouts for acne prone skin. Always remember to move with a cleanser each night.

Environmentally friendly
Chemicals found in chemical sunscreens have been linked to harmful reef bleaching, which endangers coral. While mineral sunscreens are considered ‘reef-safe.

Both types of sunscreen offer protection against UVA and UVB rays.

APPLYING MINERAL SUNSCREENS

Mineral sunscreens can sometimes be harder to apply as the formulas are slightly thicker, and the Zinc Oxide/Titanium Oxide creating the physical barrier are made up from white powders that can leave a cast on deeper skin tones.

This makes it important to follow the application steps to make sure mineral sunscreens are blended well into the skin

  1. Applying two finger lengths of formula to face + neck
  2. Using pressure to massage into the skin
  3. Waiting up to 15 minutes for the product to fully absorb and before sun exposure

For Skin Trio, we also created a medium peachy pink shade to further help neutralize the white powders and help it to be blendable across skin tones.
